With about 8 or 9 of the free transfers in my first team I won La Liga with Recreativo, having lost once.
What most of them share (especially the cheaper ones) are very high Creativity or Off the Ball or Positioning or Physical skills (Acc/Pace/Jumping) ratings. I've come to the conclusion that out of the technical skills the most important seems to be Creativity. The attacking tactical skill, Off the Ball, trumps even finishing, heading and long shots in terms of scoring. A player WILL score more if he has high ratings in the last three attributes, but they seem nowhere near as essential. The defensive tactical skill, Positioning, simply skyrockets the number of tackles/game on any player who isn't in a F/AM position. Tackling will help a player win more, but even players with low tackling win a fair number of challenges. Jumping skyrockets the number of Headers. Pace seems to be overall very useful.

Out of the bargain guys, I've found the following to do great:

Arriki Afriye and David Avilla for strikers - I play a 3-5-2 so the 2-striker combo doesn't produce many goals (seems to be a characteristic of the game), but both get a lot of dangerous shots after which the I score from rebounds, not to mention key passes. Off the ball seems to be also important for getting that key pass in the last quarter of the pitch (my AMC and two FC's seem to get more if their Off the Ball is better). Orri Freyr Oskarsson and Morocutti are two big bruisers, great for winning headers and holding the ball up.

Marajo, an incredible scoring AMC. Dobek is great for winning headers and getting key passes. Kevin Franck - ditto. Dian Kirilov - tons of runs and goals in the AMC position.

MC - Artur Correia, very effective tackler. Ravneng as well. So is Hreidar Stefansson.
Koffi Kalukembi, Alex the MLC and Kevin Franck get a ton of passes in the MC position. Also found out that in my tactic at least DCs also get a lot of tackles in the MC position if their positioning is good. Which is strange since my MCs are basically AMCs wib/wobbed into disguise. David Fox is great overall, especially in terms of headers and goals (pretty good Jumping, 15-20 on Off the Ball).

Wingers - Sergio Lara is great for a right winger, has got great workrate and teamwork, off the ball and crossing. Danny Byrne has huge Creativity, gets a ton of passes in. Same if you put Alex the MLC in the left winger position. Kaczmarek is a great runner, Montenegro is great overall. Bamuza Sono scores a ton, gets a ton of assists, has a very high Off the Ball, passing, crossing. Reyad as well, him you can use anywhere in the midfield/attacking midfield, he will perform. Also Talal abu al Magd, fantastic runner, scores a lot. Strange, but I found out that even if you switch a wingers position (playing a ML as a MR) they don't underperform significantly. Bergstrom and Chanko are great overall, but then again they are very balanced in terms of attributes (also more expensive)

Best defenders in my experience - Espin, Sbrizzo, Ahmed Al Sayed, also (but not as much) Ravneng, Victor, Tierney.

A general observation - if a player is crap at almost everything BUT a particular attribute, it seems to kick that attribute into overdrive. At least that has been true for the ones I described above. I interpret it as the match engine "knowing" that a player's good at only one or two things and then acts accordingly. I've had Espin (Positioning 18, tackling 12, marking 8 or so, jumping 15) tackle Shevchenko into a 4 and a half-time substitution.

Also, in certain situations Off the Ball seems to be interchangeable in effect with Positioning. Sergio Lara and Bamuza Sono, for example are two guys that are absolute crap in the positioning/tackling department, but have ridiculously high OtB. They complete a lot of tackles every game.

I saw some newsarticles about the FA-Cup match between Man City and Cheltenham yesterday. Is it the Michael Duff who's the manager now at Cheltenham? I think he was my favorite rightback at the game. Nice to see that kind of names in real life football. Did Duff always remain at Cheltenham?

Versatile young defensive player, he’s able to play either in the middle and on the right and can be a real bargain: Jacopo has a ridiculous non-promotion/relegation release clause and his market value is just 9k at the beginning of season 1.

Bang for buck probably the best striker I have had considering he is only on £120 p/w wages might need Russian league loaded to sign him and he doeesn't look that good at start of load. off the ball was 14 finishing 15 stamina 14 he just had so many attribute bumps from playing and luckily got in some nice coaches mid season. He scored against Dinamo Moscow in the cup as well so after 6 months playing and training you probably got a low end top league striker certainly great for back up in a top league or just to bang in loads of goals in the Russian leagues

In my latest save on the ODB, playing with Belgium's Anderlecht, I've signed two fantastic players that I had never signed before:

- Okan Buruk: Turkish attacking central midfielder from Inter who can be signed quite cheaply since he's looking for first team football and Inter doesn't value him greatly. But he has sensational stats and lives up to them by his performances. He performs really well both in the CM and ACM position. Make sure to check him out.

- Iván KAVIEDES: Ecuadorian international and striker from Celta de Vigo, 24 y old at the start of the game. I had come across him a couple of times already but now is the first time I actually signed him. Also available rather cheaply because he's not a starter for Celta, at least not in the beginning.
Prolific goal scorer and all-round maginificent attributes. Average rating +8 every season, averages a goal per game and an assist per two games, MotM performances galore. Also performs at the highest level: got me wins over Real Madrid in the Champions League.

I usually play Barsom as one of the outside attacking midfielders/forwards but I had to play him as wingback for a couple of weeks when Milevsky was out for a longer while, and his ratings were so good in that position, lots of 9's and 10's that I decided to play him more often as a wingback. I can recommend. Both on the left and the right, great ratings.
